2009 kicks off with good news for consumers
After a tough 2008, 2009 looks to be just fine — and it kicks off
with a whopping 19% drop in petrol prices on Wednesday. January’s fall in fuel
prices, along with cheaper food thanks to good summer rains, opens the way for a
cut in mortgage and car finance costs from February 12, when the Reserve Bank
next announces its interest rates. December finally saw some relief with a 50
basis point drop in interest rates. The prime rate is expected to fall at least
another 200 basis points this year.
